Fenbendazole for Cancer in Humans: Emerging Research on Its Potential as a Repurposed Treatment

Fenbendazole: A recent review article explores the potential of repurposing fenbendazole, a benzimidazole anthelmintic agent commonly used to treat parasitic infections in animals, for cancer therapy in humans

A recent review article published in Anticancer Research (September 2024, Volume 44, Issue 9) explores the potential of repurposing fenbendazole, a benzimidazole anthelmintic agent commonly used to treat parasitic infections in animals, for cancer therapy in humans and animals.

Fenbendazole is widely used in veterinary medicine to treat parasitic infections. In humans, other benzimidazoles, such as mebendazole and albendazole, are used as antiparasitic agents. However, fenbendazole is not currently approved by the FDA or EMA for human use, and its pharmacokinetics and safety in humans have yet to be well-documented in medical literature.

The review highlights several mechanisms through which fenbendazole may exert anticancer effects:

  • Inhibition of Glycolysis: Fenbendazole has been shown to inhibit glycolysis, a metabolic pathway that cancer cells rely on for energy production.
  • Down-Regulation of Glucose Uptake: The compound reduces glucose uptake by cancer cells, thereby limiting their energy supply.
  • Induction of Oxidative Stress: Fenbendazole induces oxidative stress in cancer cells, leading to cellular damage and death.
  • Enhancement of Apoptosis: The drug promotes apoptosis, a programmed cell death process that is often dysregulated in cancer cells.

While fenbendazole is not currently approved for human use, insights can be drawn from existing in vitro and in vivo animal studies on its pharmacokinetics. The review emphasizes the need for clinical trials to assess its potential anticancer effects, optimal doses, (PDF Fenbendazole Dosage Guideline)therapeutic regimen, and tolerance profiles in humans.

Given its low cost, high safety profile, accessibility, and unique anti-proliferative activities, fenbendazole presents a promising candidate for cancer therapy. However, to ensure patient safety, it is crucial to perform clinical trials to assess its potential anticancer effects, optimal doses, therapeutic regimen, and tolerance profiles.

This review underscores the importance of further research to validate fenbendazole’s efficacy and safety as a repurposed anticancer agent.
